Why Psychological safety is important

Psychological safety is a really big deal. Feeling safe to be who we are in our workplace and in society is something many of us take for granted. Not everyone feels safe, there are many factors and barriers that stop people from being able to show themselves authentically.

Psychological safety is a condition in which you feel (1) included, (2) safe to learn, (3) safe to contribute, and (4) safe to challenge the status quo—all without fear of being embarrassed, marginalized, or punished in some way.

We all have the power to create an environment where people can speak up, share ideas, ask questions and make mistakes without fear of humiliation or retribution.

It's important to help people shine, to bring their best ideas and thinking to todays complex problems. If you have psychological safety you can get on with being focussed on solving problems and being creative!

Simple steps include using inclusive language, self awareness, asking for feedback and allowing people to share their thoughts freely. Openness and transparency in communication is key to unlocking a safe and respectful dialogue.
